Open Gardens Victoria Bursary 2021

The 2021 Open Gardens Victoria Bursary enables students studying horticulture at the University of Melbourne. This award will support applications to the total value of $5,000; with the individual value to be awarded for each bursary between $2,500 to $5,000.

Funding will support a research, teaching or engagement activity, that addresses the primary purpose of the OGV: “to inspire more people to embrace gardens and gardening as an active ingredient in a good life and a greener community.”

The activity should support one or more of the core objectives of the OGV:

  1. To be connected to big issues – the environment, food, community and wellness
  2. To be a respected voice within the gardening and horticultural community
  3. To appeal to and reach a broad audience, breaking down barriers to gardening
  4. To promote gardening as a valuable form of creative expression and an important part of our culture.

There is an expectation that the funds will be fully expended by 31 December 2021.

Candidates must be enrolled in a degree of horticulture at the University of Melbourne and have completed a minimum of 25% of their qualification (i.e. 50 points for ADUH/MUH, 12.5 points for GCGD). Selection is based on candidates who have demonstrated ability in their area of study and the merits and outcomes of the proposed activity (see criteria in the application below).

The award, created through a donation made by Open Gardens Victoria (OGV) is for the promotion of student study for the benefit of horticulture, the industry and humanity. The award represents a unique opportunity to develop individual skills and knowledge and to share that with the broader community.

Successful applicants are expected to provide a formal written report within a month of the completion of the activity to OGV. Successful applicants may also be asked by OGV to educate other students about the skills learnt as part of their activity by a presentation, workshop or tutorial. Students will also be asked to submit a short article with photos for publication on the OGV website.
