Scholarship Background: In 1988, the University of Melbourne and Soroptimist International of the South West Pacific (‘SISWP’) conducted an appeal to establish the Dame Margaret Blackwood Soroptimist Scholarship at the University. The scholarship commemorates Dame Margaret's contribution to the international soroptimist community and celebrates her academic achievements. Dame Margaret died in 1986. She was one of the earliest members of the Soroptimist Club of Melbourne, founded in 1948, and was president from 1957 to 1959. She was well known and widely respected throughout the international soroptimist world.
The scholarship is open annually to female graduate research candidates only.
Selection Criteria and Process:
The Dame Margaret Blackwood Soroptimist Scholarship provides a personal scholarship for a female graduate research student undertaking research in the discipline of genetics – either plant, animal or viral – in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne. The scholarship is awarded annually, but is not intended to provide funding that would normally be covered by a supervisor.
While expenditure of the funds is at the discretion of the recipient and is not restricted to research-related expenses, the selection committee’s assessment of candidates will include their program of research in the discipline of genetics, their overall academic record, and the potential impact of the scholarship. The selection committee is particularly interested in applications from female graduate research students who are engaged in the world beyond academia.
Candidates should be confirmed at the time applications close, and preference will be given to mid-candidature applicants. Students who have graduated from the University of Melbourne and other tertiary education institutions are eligible to apply providing they are enrolled in a graduate research degree in the Faculty of Science in the discipline of genetics at the date applications close in 2021.
Candidates must complete the application form by 5:00 pm, Sunday 7 March 2021
You must attach the following documents with your application:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Academic Transcript - copy only. (NB: If the transcript is from a University other than Melbourne, please attach details of the marking/grading system of that institution)
- Letter of support from your supervisor. NB: the letter of endorsement is a key part of the application and should support the candidate's case for scholarship support. Letters that are very brief and / or do not include an actual endorsement will impact negatively on the application.
