About the Scholarship

The University of Melbourne Botany Foundation (established in 1994) supports excellence in education and research in the discipline of botany. The Foundation provides a number of student scholarships, awards and prizes annually to support students and researchers in Botany. Professor Turner was the second Professor of Botany and Plant Physiology, University of Melbourne from 1938 to 1973, and during World War II he was in charge of a team at the University working on tropic‐proofing optical instruments using a fungicide. He was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1956.

The John S Turner Postgraduate Scholarship is supported by the School of Botany Foundation and is offered to graduate researchers who are enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy (Science) and undertaking research in the field of plant physiology, pant ecology or conservation plant biology.

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, students must: 

  • Be enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy in the discipline of Botany within the School of BioSciences  
  • Undertaking research in the field of plant physiology, plant ecology or conservation plant biology 

Selection Criteria

The scholarship is offered to the graduate researcher(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their research project and personal statement.

Application Requirements

You must submit an application and provide details of your research project and a personal statement addressing your reasons for applying for the scholarship and how the funding will benefit your research.

Conditions

Recipients must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a note of appreciation or a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested. 

Outcome

All scholarship outcomes will be sent via SmartyGrants.
