About the Award

Dr Sue Newton, BSc (Hons) ANU PhD ANU was a postdoctoral research fellow at Wllcome Biotechnology in the United Kingdom, senior research scientist with Pitman-Moore in Melbourne, senior research fellow at the Centre for Animal Biotechnology at the University of Melbourne and later head of the Molecular Vaccines Department, Victorian Institute of Animal Science. In 2001 Dr Newton was awarded The Agriculture Victoria Executive Award for Leadership.

The Scholarship is to reward scientific achievement by assisting postgraduate students in the faculty of Veterinary Science to travel overseas to present their research at international conferences or to gain experience in research laboratories.

Eligibility

To be considered for this award, students must: 

  • Be enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy – Veterinary Science 
  • Have met the requirements for confirmation of their candidature 

Preference may be given to candidates undertaking research aligned to the fields of parasitology, microchemistry, molecular biology or innovation in science with an emphasis on fundamental science.

Selection Criteria

The award is offered to the student(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on the quality of their application. Other scholarships and prizes received by the students will be taken into consideration. 

Application Requirements

Students must submit an application and

  • include a personal statement outlining the benefits of undertaking the proposed travel, details of the proposed travel,
  • confirmation of attendance at a conference or research laboratory outside Australia, and
  • a statement from their supervisor in support of the proposed travel. 

Conditions

Students must: 

  • Provide evidence of travel in order to receive the benefits of the award 
  • Undertake the activity for which the award was offered while enrolled in their course and before submitting their thesis 
  • Provide a written report to the committee not later than three months after their return.
  • Agree to give permission for the University to provide their name and course details to the donor of their scholarship and to provide a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship as requested. 

Outcome

All scholarship outcomes will be sent via SmartyGrants.
