About the Scholarship

The Donor studied Science at the University but did not finish her degree. She was a science teacher at Presbyterian Ladies College for ten years and has had an active role with science education associations, including working at the Australian Council for Education Research for a number of years developing science curriculum materials. Her husband, Robert Wilkinson, was an alumnus of the University [BSc (1951)]. He worked in the Physics Department and was a lecturer in Astronomy. He was also on the Board of Forestry at Creswick and had his own observatory at their home in Bacchus Marsh. Both were wardens at Medley Hall for ten years. They had no children.

The Robert and Gretta Wilkinson Science scholarship is an annual award for a third year Bachelor of Science student who is in financial need and from a rural background.

Preference will be given to students who intend to pursue a career in teaching. Funds from the scholarship can be used to support tuition costs and living expenses.

The value and number of scholarships awarded will be dependent on funds available.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • Be in the third year of the Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne,
  • Demonstrate Financial Need by completing an online Student Financial Assessment Form 

Preference will be given to high-achieving students from a regional or remote area of Australia.

Applicants need to submit a Student Financial Assessment Form to be considered for this scholarship

Selection criteria

Eligible candidates will be ranked based on:

  • Academic merit,
  • Level of disadvantage based on financial need and rural or regional background,
  • The potential impact of funding,
  • The proposed intention to pursue a career in science education.

Outcome

All scholarship outcomes will be sent via SmartyGrants.

  • Round 1 (Jan-March applications): May-July
  • Round 2 (June-August applications): September-October
