About the Scholarship

The Dr Robert Neville McCarthy Scholarship was established by a gift from Dr Neville John McCarthy and Mrs Margaret Patricia McCarty and is offered to graduate researchers in veterinary medicine or veterinary science. Preference will be given to students with an interest in Equine Health and Performance.

The scholarship memorialises the late Dr Robert Neville McCarthy, BVSc, PhD, veterinary scientist and the son of the donors, who died in 1993.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet one of the sets of criteria below

DVM4 students

  • be enrolled in DVM4 in year of award
  • preference will be given to applicants whose research project is focused on equine health and performance
  • Applicant's research project must be approved and meet the requirements as prescribed in the 2025 Research Project rotation guide.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing (no pending supplementary or special examinations). Academic records will not otherwise be considered in the selection process.
  • Scholarship recipients will present their research project to the Class of 2025 during Capstone Week in November 2025

Applicants must submit a personal statement addressing how the proposed research project will enhance their veterinary education and the project's educational value

 

Graduate research students 

  • You must submit an application and provide a description of the purpose to which the scholarship will be applied.
  • Preference will be given to applicants whose research project is focused on equine health and performance
  • You must also include a statement of support from your supervisor.

Selection Criteria

The award is offered to the student(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on the overall quality of their application.

Students undertaking research in Equine Health and Performance are given preference.

When determining the successful candidate for this award, other awards received by candidates are considered.

Application Requirements

DVM 4 students

Applicants must submit a personal statement addressing how the proposed research project will enhance their veterinary education and the project's educational value

 

Graduate research students 

Graduate researchers must submit an application and include:

  • a personal statement addressing how the proposed research project will enhance their veterinary education or how the award will benefit their graduate research.
  • a statement of support from their supervisor. 

Conditions

Recipients must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a note of appreciation or a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.

Recipients who are enrolled in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine must commence the research project for which the award was offered and present their work to peers, if requested.

Outcome

All scholarship outcomes will be sent via SmartyGrants.
