About the Scholarship

The Norma Hilda Schuster (nee Swift) Faculty of Science scholarship is supported by a bequest left to the University by the late William Alan Schuster and his wife Norma Hilda Schuster. Mrs Schuster was employed from 1946 to 1973 as a bacteriologist and biochemist in the Veterinary Research Institute, a predecessor of the Faculty of Veterinary Science.

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Honours, Master of Science, Master of Philosophy – Science, Master of Industrial Research (Chemistry), or Doctor of Philosophy – Science (or their successors) and
  • If enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy – Science, have met the requirements for confirmation of your degree
  • Be undertaking research in the field of Biochemistry.
 

The committee uses the following definition of Biochemistry: 'Biochemistry is the study of the structure and function of components of living cells, focusing on understanding at the molecular level the biological processes that enable all living things to survive and thrive. Biochemistry focuses on the relationship of molecular structure and function, the flow of chemical energy in metabolism and the molecular processes that regulate cell and tissue behaviour.'

Selection criteria

The scholarship is offered to the student(s) or graduate researcher(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on the quality of their application. In the interest of equitable distribution of scholarships, other scholarships or prizes received from the University by applicants are considered.

Application Requirements

You must submit an application and include:

  • Personal statement addressing the alignment of your research to the field of Biochemistry
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of support from your supervisor.

Conditions

Recipients must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a note of appreciation or a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.
