About the Scholarship

Madeleine Ethel Selwyn‐Smith who died on 11 November, 1964, by her Will dated 2nd of December, 1960 appointed The Union Trustee Company of Australia Limited and Ross Grey Smith to be executors and trustees of her estate.

By her Will the testatrix bequeathed to her trustees ‘the sum of Five thousand pounds’ ... to establish one or more of the following objects namely a Memorial fund, bursary, scholarship or prize for students engaged in arboricultural research or generally to further the planting maintenance or preservation of trees.’

The income from the bequest has been applied by the trustees from time to time on the recommendation of the University towards the provision of bursaries to graduate students, the funding of expenses for postgraduate research into arboriculture and the furtherance of the planting, maintenance or preservation of trees, and the purchase of appropriate books and equipment for the Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture branch library.

The Madeleine Selwyn-Smith Memorial Award is open for award annually to a graduate student engaged in the conduct of research relating to arboriculture.

Funds from this scholarship can be used to assist research projects. This may include:

  • Participation at conferences,
  • Travel support,
  • Field-work support, or
  • Purchase of specialist research based equipment.

Note: Graduate Researchers need to apply for Study Away if travelling for research-related activities away from the University.

Eligiblity

To be considered for this award, students must: 

  • Be enrolled in a graduate coursework or graduate research program in the School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences (SAFES), or its successor; and, 
  • Be undertaking research in the discipline of arboriculture. 

*Arboriculture is defined as the study of the cultivation or management of individual trees, shrubs or other perennial woody plants. 

Selection Criteria

Eligible candidates will be ranked based on:

  • The quality of research completed in the discipline of arboriculture, or generally the furtherance of the planting, maintenance or preservation of trees.
  • The impact of additional support on the research project

Outcome

All scholarship outcomes will be sent via SmartyGrants.
