About the Scholarship

The Alfred Nicholas Fund was established in 1965, by Brayburn Securities Limited, formerly Carnbrea Pty. Limited, who offered a gift of property at Sassafras to the University for teaching and research in the biological sciences, in particular, for the use of the then departments of Zoology, Genetics and Botany. With the support of Brayburn Securities Limited, the property was later sold and the funds used to establish an endowed fund in memory of Alfred Nicholas, to provide an annual award for undergraduate or graduate students undertaking research in zoology, genetics or botany.

Benefits

This scholarship provides a fortnightly s pend with a rate of approximately $18,000 per year (full- me student rate) for one year.

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, graduate researchers must:

  • Be enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy- Science and undertaking research in the field of Zoology, Genetics or Botany
  • Be pursuing an additional research project.

This fellowship is to be awarded in rotation, between the disciplines of Zoology, Genetics and Botany.

In 2026, this will be awarded to a Genetics  student.

Selection

The scholarship is offered to the graduate researcher(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their application. Preference will be given to graduate researchers enrolled in the second year of the Doctor of Philosophy if ranked tenth or higher. 

Conditions

This scholarship is subject to the University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarship Terms and Condi ons and cannot be deferred to the following year. In addi on, graduate researchers must agree to the University sharing their name and course details with the donor of their scholarship and provide a note of apprecia on or a brief report on the benefits of the scholarship if requested.

Outcome

All scholarship outcomes will be sent via SmartyGrants.
